Carmen Red Claw: Belly of the Beast #1 is a supernatural western set in the Hellboy Universe from Dark Horse Comics.

Created by Mike Mignola and writer/artist Rae Allen, with colors by Michelle Madsen and letters by Clem Robins, this first issue introduces Carmen Red Claw—a shape-shifting gun-for-hire investigating a deadly mystery on cursed ranch land in 1870s New Mexico.

In this review, I talk about the story’s fast pacing, strong atmosphere, and folklore-driven themes, as well as how the art fits perfectly within the Hellboy Universe. I also discuss why this issue may read even better once the full four-issue arc is collected.

Topics covered in this review:
– Overview of Carmen Red Claw #1
– Supernatural western storytelling
– Themes of monsters vs humanity
– Art style and Hellboy Universe tone
– Why this series is one to watch
