In this video, I review Absolute Flash issues #1–6, part of DC Comics’ Absolute Universe, written by Jeff Lemire, with primary art by Nick Robles, and guest art by A.L. Kaplan on issues four and five.

This is not a typical Flash story. Ironically, Absolute Flash is deliberately slow-paced, choosing character exploration over nonstop speed — and that creative choice is what makes it work. The story strips Wally West of everything he once relied on: no mentor, no family, and no Speed Force. On the run from the people he once trusted, Wally must navigate a dangerous, unfamiliar world while grappling with the overwhelming possibility of multiple futures branching out before him.

This review breaks down why Absolute Flash works best when read as a complete arc, how Jeff Lemire reinvents classic Flash villains like the Rogues, and why Grodd’s new portrayal — small, surprisingly adorable, and an unlikely ally — is one of the boldest changes in the book.

Nick Robles’ art is absolutely outstanding, capturing the frenzy and kinetic energy of the Flash with big, bright, bold colors and explosive motion. While issues four and five feature guest art by A.L. Kaplan that slightly shifts the visual feel, the major moments still land and the emotional throughline remains strong.
