In this video, I review the original novella ahead of HBO’s upcoming Hedge Knight TV series.

With HBO preparing to adapt The Hedge Knight, now is the perfect time to revisit the original novella by George R. R. Martin.

Set nearly a century before Game of Thrones, The Hedge Knight tells a smaller, more intimate story within the world of Westeros—one focused on honor, innocence, and the harsh realities of knighthood.

In this spoiler-light review, I break down:

Carmen Red Claw: Belly of the Beast #1 is a supernatural western set in the Hellboy Universe from Dark Horse Comics.

Created by Mike Mignola and writer/artist Rae Allen, with colors by Michelle Madsen and letters by Clem Robins, this first issue introduces Carmen Red Claw—a shape-shifting gun-for-hire investigating a deadly mystery on cursed ranch land in 1870s New Mexico.

In this review, I talk about the story’s fast pacing, strong atmosphere, and folklore-driven themes, as well as how the art fits perfectly within the Hellboy Universe. I also discuss why this issue may read even better once the full four-issue arc is collected.
